Home Away From Home: Little Palestine by the Bay

Benefitting the Backpack kits for Gaza project:

Rebuilding Alliance is thrilled to be hosting Najib Joe Hakim’s beautiful installation, Home Away From Home: Little Palestine by the Bay, from February 12 - March 8.

Home Away from Home: Little Palestine by the Bay is a photography and oral storytelling project by Palestinian artist Najib Joe Hakim. Hakim took beautiful black and white portraits of 27 Palestinians living in the Bay Area, and recorded interviews with them about their relationship to the word "home."

Some participants are Palestinians born in Palestine who moved to the United States, and some were born here, but both describe the complexity of identity and attachment to their home in Palestine through their descriptions of family, community, and place.

The artist has been kind enough to propose that this showing of Home Away From Home functions as a benefit for our newest project, Backpack Kits for Gaza, which sends backpacks and school supplies to needy children in the Gaza strip. The project seeks to accomplish three things:

1. Support education in Gaza for K-12 school children

2. Raise awareness in the United States about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza

3. Rally American support to open the blockade by engaging our elected representatives

Rebuilding Alliance has set the goal to send 3,888 backpacks by the end of May. By sharing news of this amazing event, you can help us reach our goal. Attendees are asked to make a $20 donation to purchase a backpack for one child. Please tell your friends and family about this amazing opportunity at Rebuilding Alliance. Each backpack purchase will give attendees free admittance to the show and one raffle ticket for Najib’s prints.

Opening reception: Thursday, February 12, 6-9:30pm

Closing reception and raffle: Sunday, March 8, 2-6pm
